Lazy Daisy Block: Step-by-Step Construction
I have the coolest fabric for this quilt block, and I want you to really pay attention to how beautifully it comes together. This block is called Lazy Daisy, and it is a beautiful quilt block that is very easy to make. It is created entirely with half-square triangles, making it a great project for quilters who love simple piecing with a striking finished design.
For this demo, I am using the Celestial Skies fabric collection from Benartex. When you look at the full collection on the table, you can see all the space-inspired designs, celestial details, and beautiful colors. At first, I was not sure how drawn I would be to the larger-scale prints once they were cut down. But as I started cutting and piecing the half-square triangles, I completely fell in love with how the fabric looked in smaller units.
Lazy Daisy Quilt Block Layout
This block uses a simple half-square triangle layout. You can screenshot the layout from the video if you want a visual guide for where to place each piece.
Each finished unit in this block measures 3 1/2 inches. To make a 3 1/2-inch half-square triangle, start with 4-inch squares of fabric.
You will need:
- Four 4-inch squares of your dark fabric
- Four 4-inch squares of your lighter fabric
- White fabric squares to pair with each color
Pair each colored square with a white square to create your half-square triangles. This will give you eight half-square triangles from each color group.
Piecing the Design
Once your half-square triangles are made, arrange them according to the Lazy Daisy layout. The block is simple to assemble, but the final design has a lot of visual impact.
What makes this block especially fun is how the Celestial Skies fabric changes when it is cut into smaller pieces. The large-scale space-themed prints become smaller bursts of color and movement throughout the block. When the units are placed together, they create a beautiful, balanced design that feels fresh and eye-catching.
The first block looks lovely on its own, but once you start imagining several of these blocks pieced together, the design becomes even more exciting. Multiply this block by four, eight, or more, and you would have a stunning quilt full of movement, color, and celestial charm.
