Disappearing Hourglass Variation Quilt Block | Step-by-Step With Bob
This Disappearing Hourglass Variation turns a simple hourglass block into a beautiful design with just a few cuts and turns. I love how complicated it looks, even though it’s very easy to make! For this project, I’m using Joyful Dots Black/Multi with a white background to help those colorful dots stand out.
Fabric featured: Joyful Dots Black/Multi
Step 1: Make the Half-Square Triangles
Place the print and background squares right sides together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner, then stitch ¼" away from both sides of the line.
Cut along the drawn line and press the two half-square triangles open. Trim each to 12½" square.
Step 2: Make the Hourglass Blocks
Place the half-square triangles right sides together, positioning the print against the background on both sides. Match the diagonal seams carefully.
Draw a diagonal line perpendicular to the existing seam. Stitch ¼" away from both sides of the drawn line, then cut along it.
Press open to reveal two hourglass blocks. Trim each to a 12" square, keeping the center intersection in the middle.
Step 3: Cut Into Thirds
Working with one hourglass block at a time, cut at 4" and 8" vertically, then repeat horizontally. You’ll have nine 4" squares.
Keep the pieces in their original positions as you cut. A rotating cutting mat makes this step easier because you can turn the mat without disturbing the layout.
Step 4: Rotate the Pieces
Now comes the disappearing part!
-
Rotate the center square 90 degrees, so the hourglass changes to a bow tie orientation.
-
Rotate each of the four corner squares 180 degrees, or two quarter turns.
-
Leave the four remaining squares in their original positions.
Keep every piece in its original spot, changing only its orientation. Refer to the video to check your layout before sewing.
Step 5: Sew the Block Together
Sew the three squares in each row together, using a ¼" seam allowance. Press the seams in neighboring rows in opposite directions so they nest.
Join the rows, matching the seams, and press. Your block should measure 11" square unfinished, finishing at 10½" square once sewn into your quilt.
Repeat with the second hourglass block.
Give It a Try!
I could look at this design all day long! A few simple turns give that familiar hourglass a whole new look. Try it with your favorite print and a contrasting background, and see what you create.
