Tangled Quilt Block Tutorial | Easy Step-by-Step
In this tutorial, Bob walks beginners through creating the Tangled quilt block, a simple and fun project made entirely from 2½-inch fabric squares. Using just two fabrics—one print and one background—he explains how to lay out the design, sew the pieces together, and press seams neatly for a professional finish. Bob highlights why this block is perfect for new quilters since it involves no half-square triangles or complex seams. He also demonstrates how rotating the finished blocks creates a beautiful connecting pattern when assembled into a quilt. The video offers clear, step-by-step guidance and encourages beginners to build confidence while learning essential quilting techniques.
This one is for the beginners in the group. It’s called Tangled, and it’s a great place to start if you’re new to quilting. The finished block measures 10 inches square and is made entirely from 2½-inch fabric squares. You only need two types of fabric: a print and a background color. You’ll need twelve squares of your print and thirteen of your background fabric. Once you have those, you’re ready to go.
I’ll lay it out five squares at a time so you can see the pattern. There are no half-square triangles or tricky seams in this block, which makes it a perfect beginner project. On the back of my sample, you can see that I’ve pressed all of my seams open. This is great practice for beginners, and if you do it right, the back of your block should look almost as neat as the front.
Because each piece is a 2½-inch square, you can easily cut them from jelly roll strips or from yardage if you prefer. Once everything is laid out, start joining squares in pairs. Sew two together, then add a third to form each row. After your rows are complete, sew them together into a square.
When you combine multiple Tangled blocks, remember that they don’t automatically connect in a repeating pattern if you lay them all in the same direction. Turn a few blocks so the lines connect, and you’ll start to see a beautiful, continuous design emerge. It’s amazing how much visual impact you can create from such a simple block.
The Tangled quilt block is easy, beginner-friendly, and satisfying to make. I hope you’ll give it a try, and as always, don’t forget to like, subscribe, and happy sewing!
