Simplex Star Quilt Block (Easier Than It Looks)
This blog post introduces the Simplex Star quilt block, a beginner-friendly design made from 2 and 1/2 inch squares and half square triangles that is perfect for using up fabric scraps. The post explains how easy the block is to assemble and emphasizes the importance of starting with 3 inch squares to achieve the correct finished size for the HSTs. While the single block is charming on its own, the real impact comes from combining multiple stars, creating a bold and eye-catching finished project that feels cohesive and impressive.
These little quilt blocks are technically called Simplex Stars, and while they are charming on their own, the real magic happens when you put several of them together. I will show you what that looks like in just a moment, because the final result is absolutely fabulous.
The best part about the Simplex Star is how simple it is to make. Each block is created using four 2 and 1/2 inch squares and four 2 and 1/2 inch half square triangles. That is it. It truly does not get much easier than that. I used leftover scraps from previous projects, which makes this block perfect for using up extra fabric pieces you may already have on hand.
If you want your half square triangles to finish at 2 and 1/2 inches, remember to start with 3 inch squares. Pair two 3 inch squares right sides together, stitch a quarter inch on both sides of a drawn diagonal line, cut them apart, and press them open. This will give you the 2 and 1/2 inch half square triangles you need for the block.
The layout is straightforward and easy to assemble. Arrange your squares and half square triangles in the star formation, then sew the pieces together in pairs. Add the third piece to complete each row, and finally stitch the rows together to finish the block. The result is a sweet, balanced star that comes together quickly.
Where this design truly shines is when you combine multiple blocks. I stitched four Simplex Stars together, and the effect completely transformed the look. As soon as I laid them out side by side, I knew it had become something special. It feels cohesive, eye-catching, and like a project worth showcasing.
The Simplex Star is a wonderful, beginner-friendly block that also appeals to more experienced quilters who enjoy quick, satisfying finishes. I hope you will give it a try. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, subscribe to our YouTube channel, and as always, happy sewing.
