The Potato Chip quilt block is a fun and easy project made entirely from 2½ by 4½ inch rectangles, often called “bricks.” It doesn’t involve any complex techniques like half-square triangles, making it perfect for beginners. The name comes from how addictive it is to make, you can’t stop at just one. With 32 rectangles, you simply start in the center and build outward, adding rows in alternating directions until the block is complete. Whether you choose a wild mix of fabrics or a more uniform, structured look, the result is a simple yet beautiful design that’s quick to sew and incredibly satisfying to make.
This, my friends, is the Potato Chip quilt block pattern. It’s a simple, satisfying design that I really love, mostly because it’s so easy to make. There are no half-square triangles or tricky piecing involved, just straightforward cutting and sewing. All you need to do is cut rectangles that measure 2½ by 4½ inches. I like to call them “little bricks” because when you put them together, they can form a brick wall pattern, but today we’re making the Potato Chip version.
I actually looked up why it’s called a Potato Chip block, and the answer made me laugh. Apparently, it’s so fun to make these little bricks that you can’t stop at just one, just like eating potato chips. While I managed to stop myself from going overboard, I still really enjoyed this project. You’ll need to cut 32 of these rectangles to make the full block. I’ve seen versions that use lots of different colors and fabrics, which can look fun and wild, but I personally prefer something more uniform, structured, and symmetrical. That’s just my style.
The construction is very simple. Start with two bricks in the center, then add two more on the outside of that. I like to sew pairs of bricks together first because it helps form the next layers. From there, keep building outward by adding rows on alternating sides, rotating as you go. The block continues to grow larger and larger as you add each round. Once you reach a certain size, you’ll attach three bricks on each end, then three more on the opposite sides. The final layer uses four bricks on each edge, completing the design.
And that’s it, your beautiful Potato Chip quilt block is finished. It’s easy, relaxing, and perfect for using up scraps or playing with color combinations. I hope you’ll give it a try, and if you enjoyed this project, don’t forget to like and subscribe to our YouTube channel. Happy sewing!
