Let The Fabric Shine: The Center Square Quilt Block

This blog post introduces the Center Square quilt block, a simple and beginner-friendly design that creates a bold look using basic piecing techniques. Starting with a central square and adding side and top strips based on measured dimensions, the block comes together quickly and easily. Using fabrics from Benartex's New World Collection, the post highlights how fabric choice and color contrast can dramatically enhance the final result, making this a versatile and visually striking project.

I'm standing up for this one because it is a larger block, and it really deserves to be seen in full. I call this design Center Square, and while it looks bold and striking, it is actually very simple to make, especially for beginners.

The fabrics I chose play a big role in the overall look. These come from the New World Collection by Benartex, designed by Rob Appell. They are vibrant, detailed, and absolutely beautiful.

To create this block, start with your center square. I chose a 4-inch square of black fabric. From there, cut two additional 4 inch squares to attach to either side of the center. Sew one square to each side using a quarter-inch seam, ress them open, and you now have your center row. It is a very straightforward start.

Once your center row is complete, measure its total width. This will determine the size of the next pieces. In my case, the row measured 11 inches wide, so I cut two strips measuring 4 inches by 11 inches. These strips are sewn to the top and bottom of the center row, again using a quarter-inch seam. Press them open, and your block is complete,

The beauty of this design is in its simplicity and flexibility. You can easily adjust the size of the center square to create larger or smaller blocks. Fabric choice also makes a big impact. I like using a black center when working with bold, vibrant prints because it helps anchor the design. If you are working with softer or lighter fabrics, a white center might be a better choice. You could also fussy cut a special print for the center to highlight a particular motif.

This is a fast and satisfying project that comes together quickly, making it perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a simple yet beautifuyl quilt block. I hope you will give it a try, follow us on Facebook, subscribe to our YouTube channel, and as always, happy sewing.
