Jack in the Box Quilt Block

The Jack in the Box quilt block is a fun and beginner-friendly project that combines simple piecing with creative design. Made from 3-inch squares and half-square triangles, it comes together quickly using basic cuts and a few easy seams. The block features a 2½-inch center square framed by rectangles and rotating corner units, creating a playful, dynamic pattern that resembles swan shapes or something springing from a box. It’s an excellent way to practice half-square triangles and layout techniques while experimenting with color and fabric combinations. This cheerful pattern is both easy to make and visually striking, making it a perfect choice for new quilters.

This fun little project is called the Jack in the Box quilt block, and it’s as cute as its name. I’m not entirely sure where the name comes from, maybe the center is the “box” and the surrounding pieces are something springing out, but to me, it looks more like swans with curved necks. Either way, it’s an easy and enjoyable block to make, perfect for beginners. It combines a few simple techniques and results in a striking design once finished.

To get started, you’ll need eight white squares, each measuring 3 inches, along with four 3-inch dark squares and four 3-inch light squares. These will be paired together to create half-square triangles, which make up most of this block. Since the finished HSTs will measure 2½ inches, starting with 3-inch squares gives you room to trim them perfectly. You’ll also need four rectangles measuring 2½ by 4½ inches for the dividing sections, and one center square measuring 2½ inches.

Begin by sewing two rectangles on either side of the center square using a ¼-inch seam allowance. This creates the middle section of the block. Next, arrange your half-square triangles into groups of four to form the corners. Each corner uses the same layout, just rotated to face a different direction. Once all four corners are assembled, sew them together to form the top and bottom rows. Then attach those rows to the center section to complete your block.

The Jack in the Box block comes together quickly and is a great way to practice piecing and layout techniques. I used a playful fabric collection called Bugs from Benartex, which added a fun pop of color and pattern to the design. This block is simple, satisfying, and a great project for quilters of all levels. I hope you’ll give it a try, subscribe to our YouTube channel, and, as always, happy sewing.
