Black Cat Quilt Block Tutorial

In this video, Bob shares a fun and simple Halloween-themed quilt block tutorial featuring a black cat design. Using 2½-inch fabric squares and just a few half-square triangles, he walks viewers through the easy layout and assembly process. Bob explains how to make precise HSTs by starting with 3-inch squares, stitching along a diagonal line, and trimming them to size. The tutorial highlights how beginner-friendly this project is, especially for those looking to use festive Halloween fabrics. He encourages viewers to try the block, visit the Sewing Parts Online YouTube channel for more tutorials, and as always, happy sewing.

Halloween is coming up, and black cats are a big part of that theme. I hope you enjoy this quilt block because I think it turned out great. I used some of our Halloween fabric, which you can find linked in the description, along with some black fabric.

As you can see from the top-down camera, here’s the layout. Most of the pieces are 2½-inch squares, except for three of them. You’ll need 11 black squares and 11 Halloween-themed squares, or whichever fabrics you prefer. That part is simple.

Next, you’ll make three half-square triangles. These angled pieces are all HSTs, which you’ve probably made before. To get a 2½-inch finished HST, start with 3-inch squares. Cut two 3-inch squares from your Halloween fabric and two from your black fabric. When you make and cut them, you’ll end up with four HSTs, giving you one extra.

To make an HST, place the fabrics right sides together and draw a diagonal line. Stitch a quarter-inch seam on both sides of that line, then cut along it to separate the triangles. Once trimmed, each should measure exactly 2½ inches.

That’s all there is to it — it’s a simple, fun, and very Halloween-inspired block. I recommend joining your pieces in pairs first, then assembling them into larger squares until the full block comes together.

I hope you’ll give this one a try, and don’t forget to like and subscribe to our YouTube channel, where you can find all our past quilt block tutorials. Have a happy Halloween, and as always, happy sewing!
